As Good As It Gets Description: "Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson) is the most dysfunctional of men, a cynical, caustic romance novelist who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder. When he walks down the street, he contorts himself to avoid touching other people. He eats the same greasy breakfast every day at the same restaurant, where he brings his own plastic cutlery. He keeps to himself as much as possible and when he does speak to others, it's never to say anything nice. He insults Simon (Greg Kinnear), his gay artist neighbor, he's threatened by blacks, and he can't even find a compliment for Carol (Helen Hunt), the sweet, single-mom waitress he has a crush on.

"These three New Yorkers - none of whom appears to have a chance in hell at finding real happiness - discover their fates intertwined because of the fourth complicated character in the piece, a tiny dog named Verdell.

"Easily the most wicked, sharp-tongued, and intelligent comedy of 1997, As Good As It Gets also features remarkable acting performances from the three leads. That Melvin is at all a sympathetic, even likable, character is a tribute to Nicholson's talent and charisma. As Carol, the only waitress at the local cafe able to stand up to Melvin's tirades, Helen Hunt gives a career-defining, richly-textured, full-bodied performance. Kinnear, in a slump since his well-received debut in 1995's Sabrina remake, redeems himself here with the most vulnerable, empathetic, and hilarious performance of his career.

" Give credit to director/co-writer James L. Brooks for fashioning a story around such a despicable character, and making it work so well. Touted as “a comedy from the heart that goes for the throat,” As Good As It Gets also succeeds at tickling the funny-bone and tugging the heart-strings.
